Interior Design Challenge For a Calgary Commercial Services Provider
This is a very productive office, 10 ops, 3 doctors and open six days a week and then the unthinkable happened and someone drove their car through the front window into reception and the waiting room. No one was hurt but repairs were required and an opportunity presented itself to make some improvements at the same time. The timeline had to have the renovations taking place over the Christmas holidays with minimal closure time. Additional seating in the waiting room was a high priority and a staff room to accommodate the people and personal storage was needed. By implementing technology improvements also more workstations and storage could be provided. When complete the owners hoped for an updated look while preserving the majority of the existing finishes that would not be modified.

The Design Solution:
A new reception desk was first on the action list. A rectangular shape replacing the round would accommodate for a third person and a workstation at the rear of reception for a short term touch down area. While the space allocated to the waiting room was not modifying a new chair selection, with two tone vinyl, replaced the over stuffed existing waiting room chairs and would add more people. A curved custom bench also replaced many chairs allowing for versatile seating for families. A central island with some seating and storage for the magazine collection removed end tables and a large coffee table. All of these small improvements realized the objective of adding six chairs to the waiting room. A reorganization of the rear spaces and relocation of the equipment created a larger staff room. Existing cabinets were relocated within the space and a large 60” round table now accommodated 8 people. Better lockers for personal belongs flanked one wall and additional coat and shoe space was created. Over the Christmas holidays the flooring, paint and new millwork were installed leaving the office only closed for three days during the course of construction.
