A Busy Family’s Nest
Residential Home Renovations for a Growing Family
The Challenge:
As with any growing family the current spaces within their home were not meeting the needs. They have a very active lifestyle and children in after school activities. An open floor plan still was not delivering the effective spaces conducive to everyday events such as cooking, eating and kid’s homework. The kitchen had limited countertop space and not enough efficient storage. The eating area was a large traditional dining space set to hold ten people. This was not the intimate family eating space for four to enjoy a meal and catch up on the day’s adventures. Aging children were bringing home more homework that needed parent supervision or involvement. With entertaining as a focus, including large family gatherings, this chef needed the right tools at her finger tips, preparation space and kitchen efficiencies.

The Design Solution:
The ideas originally presented by the owners were focused on a basement development to give the kids a space to play, accommodate for the occasional guest and provide a larger entertainment area for the family gatherings. Based on the evaluation of how the family was currently using their existing spaces we turned the attention to the most commonly used areas of the kitchen, master bathroom and bonus room. A renovation in these areas would improve the overall function and give the family the best value for their money in the areas of their home they use every day. By eliminating a large jetted tub that was seldom used in the ensuite a walk in shower and two personalized vanities could be created. Adding storage in the bonus room for homework, movies and scrapbooking now kept the children within close proximity of the kitchen and a parent. Enlarging the kitchen made room for a small four person eating area at the end of the island and additional storage and countertops for the cooking and entertaining needs on the perimeter. Low maintenance finishes were chosen such as tile, paint grade cabinets and quartz countertops. The entire main floor is covered with a porcelain wood-look tile and accented by a hexagonal feature. The ensuite is a light tiled finish establishing a clean, fresh introduction to your day. We provided comforts and functionality to these areas where they would be used and enjoyed by the family every day.
